NYCMCC Notes - meeting of May 3, with David Rock
David Rock came with a new book, Quiet Leadership, a very thoughtful tome, and one which I immediately and happily bought. In it he earnestly implores coaches to let the client make the discoveries, and experience them. But David had much more to tell us. In his presentation, Coaching with the Brain in Mind, he showed us how the brain actually works. Following, some tidbits.
- The brain tries to "hardwire" everything it can. For that reason, it's almost impossible to remove an old habit. On the other hand, it's really easy to create a new one,
- The brain's aggressive "hardwire" practice actually creates physical changes within the brain. In fact, then, coaching actually changes the clien'ts brain!
- The brain responds appropriately to discussions about how bad we are or how good we are. Therefore, while things which we've done which didn't work are very interesting, they don't provide positive inspiration for the future. In fact, they tend to hurt us. Alternatively, discussion of what works well or might work is very powerful, and provides positive information. While David didn't dismess therapeutic models, he clearly believes that coaching into future possibility is the brain-based option of first choice.
David is erudite and scholarly, but his enthusiasm is infectious. We set aside our Triad Coaching program, and had him lead us in employing his coaching model for the balance of the evening! Good stuff!
