About health insurance - 11/18/2005

As you may know, NYCMCC has been exploring the possibility of making health insurance available to its members. We have indeed found an organization which can help. Essentially, you can get a "group" rate even if you are a group of one! Here are some of the details.

We're working exclusively with a company which is a source of health insurance for the very small (just you) business, or for the slightly larger business (you plus someone else on the payroll). The business name is USFSB, the United States Federation for Small Business. Their primary focus is in the NY Metropolitan Area, although they have service for 20 of the 50 states for one person businesses and 32 of the 50 states for businesses with 2 or more people.

For the one-person business in NYC, they have 7 different plans - 6 with HMOs (means a network of must-use doctors, referral within the network) and one POS (Point of Service) where you can refer out-of-network at a greater expense. Prescription and dental coverage is also available.

For the 2+ person business in NYC, they have a total of 27 different plans! These plans are authored by HMOs and POSs, plus EPOs (big HMO), PPOs - (Preferred Provider - in or out of network, and Catastrophic - low-premium, high deductible. The Catastrophic plan (despite its name!) is interesting because you can institute a Tax-Deferred Savings Program alongside. If your deductible is, say $3000, you pay $3000 and then the insurance starts beyond that. With the HAS, or tax deferred savings account you can set aside tax free money to pay the deductible or other medical expenses not covered by insurance. This plan's been described as the best-kept secret in the insurance business (probably because the insurance companies don't make as much money with it.)

The same plans do not always exist outside of NYC. These plans vary with availability and price so please call or email Matt Cardamone to receive quotes for plans available in your area.

How to implement: Call Matt Cardamone at 718 701-0087 or email at matthewc@usfsb.com to explore the various plans with him, and, when you're ready, make a choice. Call me if you have any questions about this program for coaches or about the NYCMCC at 516-944-6454. Next, become a member of the NYMCC for $50. Go to the home page at www.nycmcc.com with your credit card, find the statement "To become a Member, you pay $50 once yearly. To register as a member, Click here." Click there. Being a member with the NYCMCC allows USFSB to waive its membership fee.

Once your membership is confirmed, Matt will send you the paperwork you need to enroll for the insurance of your choice. For more information about USFSB, go to www.usfsb.com.
